A Marathon employee was injured Tuesday in a barge accident on the Ohio River near South Point, the company said in a media statement on Wednesday.
The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
“Our thoughts are with our injured co-worker and his family, and we have been in contact with them to offer support,” the company said in the statement. “Out of respect for our injured employee and his family’s privacy, we are unable to provide more information on his condition.”
The statement went on to say, “We are thankful to our crew and the community first responders for their remarkable and quick actions to render aid.
“The incident did not involve any type of release or environmental impact. We remain committed to protecting the safety of our employees and contractors, our neighbors and the surrounding community.”
Kenova (W.Va.) Police Chief Bob Sullivan tells us his department, the Kenova and Ceredo fire departments, and Marathon’s own rescue crew responded to the accident.
